Who We Are

Bedford Citizens for Land Preservation (BCLP)
PO Box 86
Bedford, VA 24523

Bedford Citizens for Land Preservation’s 15 member Board of Directors and 11 member Advisory Council represents a microcosm of the diverse sectors of our community that need to work together to achieve balanced growth in Bedford County.

Our Board of Directors and Advisory Council includes “been heres” and “come heres,” developers, real estate professionals, naturalists, farmers and landowners, businessmen and women, conservationists, professionals in law, banking and other fields, and government (county and state) representatives. We work closely with Bedford County's Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission and the Department of Planning. The majority of our board members have graduated from Bedford County’s Citizen Planning Academy.

For 2008 the Board is organized itself around two major initiatives:
Education and Government Relations

The Education Committee will focus its efforts on planning and implementing workshops on a variety of topics to educate the general and farming public about conservation and agricultural issues; produce a quarterly newsletter; plan and host the Barbara Hatcher Award event annually; promote education and awareness about conservation easements; promote education and awareness between suburban and agricultural neighbors; and promote, as possible, a grassroots presence in the print media about relevant issues. The committee is chaired by Nan Carmack and its members include Greg Eaton, Cynthia Hall, Philip Thompson, and John Lofaso.

The Government Relations Committee will focus its efforts on staying informed about government process as pertains to land use; take positions on such processes as relevant and agreed upon; brainstorming and supporting tools for responsible growth and agricultural development; and participating were feasible in infrastructure discussions and transportation policy development. This committee will be chaired by Greg Modelewski and its members include Michael Kenney, James Jones, Pete Fellers, Dan Temeles, and Philip Thompson.

Balanced growth that maintains Bedford’s rural quality of life and allows for future economic development of the industries dependent upon our open space and natural beauty – agricultural, equine, tourism, and outdoor recreational activities – depends upon finding common ground among diverse interests within our community. Together, we can ensure that Bedford is still a “good place to live” in 25 years.

Our Board of Directors meets the third Thursday of every month from 7-9 PM in the Main Floor meeting room at the Bedford County Administration Building, 122 E. Main Street, in Bedford. These meetings are open to any interested citizen.

BCLP Advisory’s Council meets periodically with the Board of Directors which seeks advice from individual members an on-going basis.

The work of BCLP (Click on What We Do) is carried out solely by board members and volunteers. BCLP has no paid staff or office.

We are not a membership organization due to the high costs of administration of a membership program. However, if you’d like to receive our mailings, a one-time donation of $10.00 will ensure that you are placed on our mailing list. Or, you can choose to be placed on our electronic mailing list (for free) by sending a note to James Jones.

Clearly, our research and public education efforts require additional funding. If you wish to contribute more, your support would be greatly appreciated. Your contribution is tax-deductible for state and federal income tax purposes. Make checks payable to “Bedford Citizens for Land Preservation” and mail to BCLP, PO Box 86, Bedford, VA 24523

BCLP needs volunteers to assist with mailings and hospitality at public programs. If your time is limited, but you would like to lend a hand, please contact Nan Carmack
